Patience. Focus. Practice. She did it!
In our Saturday Club, the children engage in a range of therapeutic activities such as outdoor games, whittling, fire lighting and cooking as well as indoor activities like Lego therapy, baking, art and role play. During these activities friendships can be supported by exploring anything that comes up using a person-centered, non-directive approach.
As we gather with the same children and adults over a long period of time, close relationships are fostered. Real opportunities for connection arise - with each other and with nature - whilst we encourage their autonomy and celebrate individual achievements.
We currently run monthly Saturday Clubs for Kinship Care children. Ten children split into 2 age groups come together during term time through 2024 (May – November) at a venue with a large wild outdoor space.
In our Holiday Clubs, the children engage in a range of therapeutic activities similar to our Saturday Clubs. This offer to our community is another way to create connection and belonging in the outdoors. We are proud to create this safe space to process trauma for our participants.
At our Holiday Club older children are enabled to mentor younger children: this way the older children develop their self-esteem and ensure that they are an active useful member of the group.
Additionally, these Holiday Clubs have been created to also provide the carers of our participants with respite and connection to others.
We currently run these Therapeutic Forest School Holiday Clubs for a total of 9 days a year, spread over 3 school holidays (April, August and Oct).
At Wild Hearts Services CIC, we provide opportunities for young people to process trauma in the outdoors. We create a safe space to learn new skills and create new friendships. We also provide connection and respite to carers and (grand)parents of these children.
Our approach at Wild Hearts Services CIC is attachment-based and relational, with a high ratio of consistent adults and children in the same setting each time. This way we build meaningful relationships and a sense of safety within the entire group.
The positive impact for young people engaging with us consists of a newly developed sense of belonging and ‘not being alone’, through new and positive relationships with peers, development of self-esteem through active participation in activities, and a stronger connection to the outdoors.
